Mary Ellen Mark

Mary Ellen Mark was born in 1940 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At the age of nine she received a kodak brownie camera, and fell in love with photography ever since then. In highschool she was very active taking on many different activities like, painting, drawing, and being a head cheerleader. The first college she attended was the University of Pennsylvania where she earned a BFA degree in art and history and painting. In 1964 she continued on to Annenberg school for communication to earn a master’s degree in photojournalism. The following year she received a scholarship to go to turkey and photograph for a year. During her stay in turkey she went off to visit, England, Germany, Greece, Italy, and spain.
Mary has accomplished many things, and received many awards in her life. Mary loved to take photos so much in fact that she decided to turn her photos into books. Mary has published over a dozen books that tells the story of different peoples unique lives. She has received awards like, Lucie Awards, Lifetime Achievement in Photography Award, and Outstanding Contribution Photography Award.
Mary got to show the world different unique situations of the way others live. The photos she took got to document people’s individual experiences, and ways of life that would have otherwise would have gone unnoticed. She wanted to use the power of photography to open the world’s eyes. She wanted to show her perspective on people who live outside the social norms. Her
photos have shown me that life is full of unexpected surprises, and that life is to be lived for today not tomorrow. She will always be remembered as an inspirational woman who dedicated her life to give us insight on the the world and the people who live in it.
